Celebrating My 19th Birthday Wal-Mart Style.

This week I am linking up again with Bonnie for TBT, the theme this week is birthdays!!

After looking through pictures for yesterday's post about my college roomie I came across some gems from my 19th birthday with her and my cousin. In true college fashion we celebrated my birthday by getting all dressed up for dinner at the Macaroni Grille and then continued the party at Wal-Mart because when you go to school in Tulsa, OK that is all there is to do :)

I am sure that this night we could have easily been featured on people of wal-mart but we had so much fun and I will never forget that night. It was truly a birthday to remember.

My First IRL Friend Reader

I am never good at keeping things to myself. When I have some exciting news I want to tell everyone I see but am usually able to contain myself for a while. So when I started this whole blogging thing the only person I told was Jamal. It was something new and exciting to me but for once I was fine with no one knowing.

As time went on and I became more involved with blogging like actually meeting people it got harder for me to keep my mouth shut. And it wasn't that I didn't want people to know before but it was something that I wanted to keep to myself. Ya know like when you got the toy you always wanted for Christmas and no one could even look at it. That is how I felt with my blog, and that it would help me to figure it out without worrying about what my friends would think of what I wrote.

Well anyway I have now told many people that I blog. And the responses are usually one of the following:
a. Cool...(meaning they don't really care)
b. What do you blog about? (they don't really get it)
c. Can I read it? (nosy people. just kidding! :) this is actually my favorite response)

So up until now I had not let anyone that I knew IRL read my blog. But my first college roomie Briana has a blog of her own and I decided that she would be the perfect candidate to be introduced to my blog first. So I tracked her down on Twitter and from there she easily found my blog.
Gearing up to cheer on our first basketball game
Birthday fun in Wal-Mart

So hey Brinana!! I hope you feel honored :) You are my first friend to see this here little blog of mine and I wanted to dedicate this post to you. We haven't seen each other in four years now but hopefully that will one day soon change. I hope that you enjoy catching up on my life :)
Have you ever seen two better looking reindeer?

Do you have IRL friends that read your blog. Did you tell your IRL friends right away when you started blogging or did you take your time?

Those Aren't Your Initials!!

Monday is here and I am actually pretty excited about it! One more week until Jamal and I are house sitting which means that we have a huge house with a pool and a hot tub all to ourselves. We cannot wait.

I worked this past weekend and don't really remember doing anything blog worthy other than on Sunday we went to a grad party and were there the whole day. It was fun and we played a few games of sand volleyball which is always fun. There were also some really bad storms over the weekend leaving a lot of people still without power! Praying for them and thankful that everyone is safe and we have power here at home.

Although I did have a good night when Jamal came home from shopping to show off all of his clothes he just bought himself he always had a surprise for me in the bags. My favorite game and a new CD. The man is smart. He also brought the mail in with him and I found out that I won a giveaway from Kait. New shoes coming soon :)

A few weeks ago I was browsing Groupon and found one for a customized iphone case from The Case Studio. I looked at the website and saw some cool designs and after a day or two decided to buy it. Well of course after that it took me forever to pick out my perfect case. There were so many options it was almost impossible for this indecisive girl to pick one. But eventually I found one I love and ordered it.

It is my first ever monogrammed item and I LOVE IT. Seriously I think I may become addicted. I have always been obsessed with my initials, BMW and so at first monograms were not appealing to me. But I guess they grew on me and now I want everything monogrammed! haha.

What was your first monogrammed item?

PS does anyone else have the problem of people telling you you messed up your initials?? It happens to me every single time I show someone my new case. Or maybe my friends just are not up to date

First Crushes and Zip Off Pants

Linking up again with Bonnie for Throwback Thursday.

This week the topic is elementary school crushes. I went to a small private school for elementary. Each class had two grades in it. 1st&2nd together, 3rd&4th together, ect. And I was pretty boy crazy from day one.

My first crush was Brady, but that was even before I started school. In I believe it was 4th grade we had a new boy come to our school. In a big public school this is a big deal right? Imagine how big of a deal it is in a school of 100; grades k-8. This boy was named Jacob. And he was new and so cute. Naturally I was shy and nervous about talking to him. So I came up with a brilliant idea. Buy pants like his!! Hilarious and weird I know. But don't they say that imitation is the best form of flattery? So I was trying here.

Well these pants I speak of, they were not just any pants. They were tan cargo pants with zips at the knee so I could make shorts. And yes I somehow convinced my mother that I needed these. I wore them all them frequently and felt so cool every single time.

Have you ever done anything crazy for someone you liked back in the day? Anything to make you look as ridiculous as I did?

Girl After My Own Heart

I don't remember if I ever mentioned that my sister Elizabeth won an essay contest at school and got to go on a trip to Arizona/Mexico, and I am too lazy to look back and see ;) The trip was to go and bring down school supplies for kids in Mexico so that they could go to school next year. She got a copy of her letter back the other day. It was incredible. So her and very honest. I wanted to share it with you to show off my little sissy. (it is only the first half, she never got the second page back)
She is the one all the way to the right with dark hair

"I'd really like to go to Mexico. Scratch that, I'd love to go to Mexico! My mom works at a school in Minneapolis, that is bilingual. My sister, cousin, and Grandma took spanish in college, So I know a bit of Spanish, obviously :) I honestly love doing stuff life this! Helping people in need! When you help someone in need, after helping them you see their faces all lit up!! Then you just get this really happy feeling! I've helped out at an orphanage before, and it was great! You can tell by looking into their eyes they are truly grateful to you. I know a lot of people don't understand. They just go, "Oh...yea...whatever." They don't actually TRY to help them. The kids do need it. We have more than them, so we should definitely help them. Everyone should pitch in a little at least! A little makes a lot together. I mean, I guess some people just don't realize it. You need to go to school to get a good education, to get into a good college, to get a good job, to get good money to feed your family in the future. These kids' dreams is to go to school."

And that is all we have, I wish we could have read the next page

*sorry these are all pictures of pictures.

Seriously how amazing is she? She is just 12 years old but knows so much. And one of the things I love so much about this letter is her passion in it. I live to volunteer and help those in need. That is where my heart is and to read these words from my sister, it really is just so great. I am so proud of her for writing this and going on that trip to help those kids out. She had a lot of fun and while doing so did something so amazing for those kids that they will never forget.

He's Here to Cook, She's Here to Eat

So one night last week Jamal just happened to by flipping through the paper and found a flyer for a Rib cooking contest taking place this past Saturday, just a few short days away. Of course once he saw it he was in. He looked it up on the internet and signed up right away. I was a little nervous, he had to pay to get in and considering that he doesn't have that go-to recipe like many people I figure the chances of winning were slim.

Well the next night he grilled up some sample ribs so that we could find a winning recipe. He made four different kinds and of course I loved 3 of the 4, AKA I was no help at all. They were sooo good, I couldn't help it :)

Before we knew it Saturday morning was here and we were off. He had no recipe in mind, just a bunch of ingredients ready to throw together whatever he wanted. He didn't want to go with one of the sample he made so his contest recipe was yet again something he made up on the spot.
Jamal was being crabby/nervous and wouldn't look at the camera on our way there

There were only 6 people in the contest which was really nice since it was our first time. It was pretty laid back and not too overwhelming. They provided the grill for the contest, the big green egg. I guess these are the best grills out there. Jamal is now in love and wants one. But anyway it was his first time ever using one so that in itself was a bit intimidating.

The day itself was pretty slow. Once the ribs were on the grill we just hung out waiting for time to pass.

And then it was the moment of truth. The ribs were off the grill and in the containers ready to be taste tested by the judges. There were 3 amazing judges. Stu "Green Egg Guy", Colin Pearmund "World renowned British chef, executive chef at Wayzata Country Club", and Erik Paulsen "MN Congressman".

I watched the judges taste each and every single rib. They never made any facial expressions.

Then a lady came out and announced the winners. 3rd was called, not us. Then 2nd, still no Jamal. And finally 1st, alas it was not us. We were sad but not too surprised. We were the only first timers in the bunch. Jamal got his final score was was in fourth place, just one point behind third!! So it was a tough loss but we are still really happy with how well he did.

And as I am sure you can imagine, Jamal is now addicted and many BBQ contests will be in our future. He might be in another one this weekend!

Give Me Fro-Fru

This was my weekend off, and much needed. For the summer I have a set schedule which I love but with that I work M-F and T-S every other week so I alternate between 1 day weekends and 3 day weekends. When those 3 day weekends come around I am so ready for them after the long two weeks at work.

Saturday morning we got up early to go Jamals first ever cooking contest. I will post more about it tomorrow but it was a long day. After that we went to Greg and Karissa to play some games. We got home that night ready to settle down and watch some TV but we started fighting. Between the long day and me coming off of my long work weeks I think we were both overly tired. But it was nothing that going to bed and getting some sleep couldn't fix :)

Sunday we woke up and after the day before Jamal decided to sleep in and skip church, so I got to watch some 'Say Yes to the Dress'. After that I cut up and froze some fruit so that we could make some Yonanas. Yonanas is a little machine that makes "ice cream" from frozen fruit. Really cool and healthy and something that I have called fro-fru, like fro-yo but not  :)
yummy strawberries, blueberries and bananas.

Once Jamal got up we planted some herbs we bought. We have mojito mint, cilantro, basil, and orgeno. I have never planted anything so we shall see how this goes. And I know that it is already June so we may be too late to see anything happen anyway. It was just something fun to try so we will see.

Even with the 3 days the weekends just doesn't feel long enough. I am getting a much needed massage today and then who knows what the day will bring.

Stranded At A Gas Station With Creepy Old Men

When I saw Bonnie's great idea for TBT and each week for the summer she had a prompt I knew I had to do my first ever TBT post. I have been wanting to post about this for a while now but haven't got around to it, but this is the perfect opportunity. The theme for this week is about early driving days. At this point we had been driving for about 2 years, so that counts right?

My freshman year of college my cousin and I went to school in Tulsa, OK. One of our aunts was getting married back home in MN that January and of course I didn't want to miss it. Meagan (my cousin) had kept telling me that maybe we should stay at school and that she had a bad feeling about the trip but I blew her off determined to get home-mainly because I just wanted to get out of Tulsa anytime I possibly could. So with my persistence we took off driving late in the night to head home.

Everything was going well for the first 2 hours of the drive. I was behind the wheel and Meagan was trying to nap in preparation for her turn to drive. At some point Meagan noticed the temperature gauge rising on her car (we took her scary car) I didn't think it was a big deal it was only halfway up but she insisted that something was wrong and that I should pull over. So I get off at the next off ramp and as soon as we slow down it we see that the car is overheating. Of course us two young and mechanically challenged girls jump out instantly and freak out thinking the thing is gonna blow up.

I call my mom right away and she says she is on our way to get us. We are in Missouri at this point, a good TEN HOURS from home. Remember that we are still standing on the side of the road in what we later find out is Nevada, MO, the middle of nowhere. anyway after we had been standing there freezing for about 5 minutes a car pulls over. It has a Man, Woman, and kids in it, Meagan talks to them. They said that they needed to drop their son off and that they would be back in 10 minutes to help us.

Here is where the idiocy/fear for my life comes in. The couple comes back and says they will show us to a small travel station down the street. Well my lovely cousin flips out and refuses to get back in her car and drive it. Thus leaving me with the strange man to ride in her car and she gets the lady.
This was our view for ten hours with no money to even buy anything

Thankfully we make it to the Travel Center alive and not being driven off by our coulda been kidnappers. The guy makes sure we get in safe and the nice couple leaves. So now here we are late at night stranded at this joint until my mother gets us. The workers were very nice to us and kept checking that we had anything we might need.

After a while we are both exhausted and crabby. There is a back room where the truckers hang out and Meagan thinks it would be a great idea for us to go back there and try to sleep...uh no. Are you kidding me? So that we can die?!

So we fight about that for a bit, my being stubborn and her scared we stay put. Then not too long after a man comes and sits with us. He tells us that he can get us a hotel room across the street that he will pay for. He won't come in or have a key just help us young ladies out by buying us a room for the night. I know where this is heading but my cousin is a little naive. She wants to take the guy up on this!! And yet again here are fighting because I am trying to keep us alive until my mom comes. Needless to say there was no way I was going anywhere with that guy so at the table, in the front, we stayed.

Finally my mom and step dad arrive after nearly ten hours of...of what I don't even know. Misery? And she saves us. And like I said earlier I just wanted to be back in MN so that is where we went instead of the logical thing of going back to OK just two hours away. We made it to the wedding in time and now have a funny story to tell and a reminder that road trips with her might risk my life.
This is us at the wedding unscathed

I know that this was super long but if you read it all I hope you got some entertainment out of it :)

Jonah Josiah Is Here

As I mentioned last week, Greg and Karissa did not have their baby on Monday, but Tuesday she was able to go in to get induced and later that afternoon little Jonah was born. After I got off work Jamal and I went to the hospital to meet him. He pretty much stole my heart. I am in love with him. He is the cutest little guy at just under 8lbs.

Wednesday Jamal went to the hospital again to bring them lunch and they asked him to stop by their place to grab a few things to bring back later. When I found this out I was so excited because I could leave a little something for them at their house for when they went home! I had a few things at home and then made a quick trip to target to get a couple more things and off to their place we went. I organized everything on their island in the kitchen so that they would see it right it when they got home. I was so excited to be able to give them a surprise waiting for them.

After that we went to the hospital again for a little bit to keep them company and so that I could hold Jonah some more :) I kinda love babies and want to be your best friend if you have one, luckily for me I now have an adorable little godson who I get to see all the time.

Then this past Sunday we went over to Greg and Karissas again to hang out. We got to accompany Jonah going out to dinner for his first time. We choose Famous Daves (I do not recommend the onion strings there). After that we went back to their place so the guys could catch the basketball game. I was pretty excited because I got to see Jonah with his eyes open for the first time that night. So cute.

Jamal and I are so excited for Greg, Karissa, Nina and Jonah. It is crazy to think that we have only known them for a year now. We are so happy to be apart of their lives and watch Jonah grow.

Sometimes I Get Silly

Some people are really stylish and do fashion posts,

Some people have great space and ideas and do interior decorating posts,

Some people are really creative and do craft posts,

some people know their way around a kitchen and do recipe posts,

some people have cute animals and post about them,

some people have cute babies and post about them,

some people travel a lot and share their experiences,

I sometimes have nothing to post and this is what happens.

I may not have all of the above to post about but I would say that I have a pretty animated face ;)

*no alcohol was consumed for the making of this post

MN Blogger Meet Up: Let's Get Chocolate Wasted

And chocolate wasted we got. We got invited to a private party for the grand opening of See's Candies new location at Southdale. They were so welcoming to us, I seriously never could have imagined the greatness that ensued.

We walked into the store and were greeted with some ladies holding trays of truffles for us to sample. The first taste I got was of a key lime truffle. After we all got in the store we were just kinda standing around when I found out that we could have any chocolate we wanted that they had displayed at the counter. And as much as we wanted!! I couldn't believe it.

But as if the unlimited chocolate samples weren't enough we then got to try our hands at packaging the chocolates and take home the box that we made!!

While we were there we got a little history lesson on See's, I Love Lucy was filmed at one of their factorys!!

We had fun socializing and trying as many chocolates as we possibly could and then we got sent home with a nice little Swag Bag. So cool! It was filled with even more chocolate.

This was such a fun event and the chocolates were delicious  If you have a See's near you, you must stop in and check them out. They offer free samples every. single. day.

*Thank you Carolyn for some of these pictures :)
